Erving was the first player to popularize the slam dunk and this brought new meaning 'to playing above the rim'. The Doctor was named to eleven NBA All-Star teams and named MVP of the All-Star game twice. Erving as selected to the First Team All-NBA five times as well as garnering league MVP honors in 1981. In 1983, The Doctor led the Sixers to the NBA championship over the Los Angeles Lakers, 4-0. Julius Erving was elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1993 as well as being voted one of the 50 greatest players in NBA history. In the spring of 1963, Irv Kosloff and Ike Richman purchased the Syracuse Nationals. The team was renamed the 76ers and Dolph Schayes became the first coach for the 1963-64 season. On January 15, 1965, the club acquired Wilt Chamberlain from the San Francisco Warriors for three players and cash. The Sixers began to make history! By July of 1968, the Sixers had won an NBA championship(1966-67) and traded Wilt to the Lakers for three player and no cash! Not until the arrival of Julius Erving in 1976, would the Sixers make the Finals again.
